BIOGRAPHY

The compositions of Marshall Estrin combine complex musical ideas with rich textures and highly nuanced structural elements. Estrin’s music emphasizes the dramatic power of instrumental and vocal music and forges new pathways of expression within 21st-century musical language. His persuasive and vivid compositions compel the listener to perceive his work not only viscerally but on a narrative and philosophical level as well.

Estrin’s works have been performed throughout the United States, Europe and Asia. His composition for solo cello, Kitaroidía, was performed at Carnegie Hall/Zankel by Zlatomir Fung in 2019. Mr. Fung also performed a portion of Estrin’s arrangement of Borodin’s Petite Suite at Carnegie Hall in 2022 and premiered Estrin’s
Fantasia Carmen in March 2023. Mr. Fung premiered Estrin’s multi-movement work for cello and piano, Cinematheque, an homage to iconic 20th and 21st-century films, in 2024.

Estrin’s other major works include the operas, The Interview and Shine;  the large scale orchestral works, The Fifth Element and Rashōmon, winner of the 2021 Arthur Friedman Prize; and String Quartet No. 1  which was performed by the Arditti Quartet in 2023.
